Dhoni Quitting Captaincy : India Finding Hard To Say Goodbye

9 min read

Yesterday marked the end of an era, as M.S.Dhoni stepped down as the captain of ODI and T20 teams. The news has taken aback many of his fans, but we have to understand that this was not an overnight decision, and like his other decisions probably this is also for the best, for he surely knows his moves. There is no doubt in saying that M.S.Dhoni is the best captain that India has ever seen.

Under his captaincy India has won 2007 world T20(South Africa),2011 World Cup (India) and 2013 champions trophy (England). Indian Cricket team has scaled new heights under his captaincy, to name a few, out of 199 ODIs that he captained , India has won 110 and lost 74, and out of 72 T20Is, out of which India won 41 and lost 28. He was also India’s “most successful test captain” with 27 wins.

His ability to thrive under pressure has won him the title of “Captain Cool”, only a calm mind can see the moves for an unpredictable sports like cricket, perhaps this is the cause of India’s victory under his tenure.

He is a team player,  he is known to back the team by keeping his interests sidelined. He plays towards a goal and always has plans when team is in trouble. His last minute tactics are worth watching even for a non-cricket fan.

He is a great motivator, he has been seen promoting young talents, and cheering up them for a better performance. We have seen him making younger players pose with the trophy and himself settled in the back, a leader in true sense.

His attitude has made him achieve what he has achieved, and even after this humongous success he is the most down to earth personality that we have ever seen. His way of dealing with success and failure, criticism and praise has made him what he is. He handled the criticism when the controversy of Yuvraj Singh(‘s father) very well and let his actions speak in front of media.

He does not takes credit of the success very easily. “Harsha Bhogle” has said on many occasions to speak about himself but the man always says it was someone else. In his words ” Always, always it’s someone else, hopefully one day he will say, yes I did well”.

He plays cricket like chess, depicting every moves of the other team, knowing the next move are something that only captain cool can do. He has this amazing cricket sense and a sober mind which makes him different.

In the end I would like to say it takes a lot of hard work, persistence, and ability to be a sportsman but it takes a lot more than that to be “Dhoni”.
